In any case, everything familiar will be thrown aside as they take those first uncertain steps.Ħ: Tests, Allies, Enemies-This stage presents the obstacles the character must overcome. Perhaps they leave home, or do something they were always reluctant or scared to do before.
They may begin it willingly, or they may be forced, but either way, their Ordinary World is about to become not so ordinary. They might receive sage advice, an important object, or training in the areas they need to face the challenge.ĥ: Crossing The Threshold-The character finally makes their first move, and begins the quest, in whatever form it takes. It could be in the form of a person, or an event, but something will give them the confidence they need to continue. They will be obstinate against taking necessary action, and this will likely cause more suffering or trouble as a result.Ĥ: Meeting The Mentor-Vital guidance and encouragement arrive at this stage, spurning the character to action in spite of their contradictions. Perhaps they fear for the welfare of a loved one, or going against the status quo. They may feel they don't have what it takes to succeed, or perhaps they don't want to disturb the Ordinary World which they're so used to. This deepens our relationship with them, and makes them more human. Either way, the Ordinary World is about to change, and the character must do something about it, whether they like it or not.ģ: Refusal Of The Call-Even if the character is eager to face their new challenge, they'll face fears and doubts about it. Sometimes it comes in the form of a message, a conversation, a chance meeting, or a nagging liability they've tried to avoid thus far. It usually disrupts their peace somehow, threatening what they know and love, though it doesn't always have to be a traumatic or violent event. A call to action, jolting the character out of the familiar, and urging them to undertake the quest. In this stage, we learn important details about our hero/heroine, their outlook and personality, backstory, and what they're capable of.Ģ: The Call To Adventure-This is the scene or event which begins the adventure. The protagonist's everyday life and routines are presented in a way which endears them to us, and makes us sympathize with their plight. This is a kind of safe place, or 'comfort zone', which they may or may not want to change. These stages don't have to presented in this exact order, but you'll find most every story in existence contains some element of each of these points. The twelve stages are assigned to twelve cards, which can then be used to determine the shape of your story, and the various changes the character will face and undergo as the plot unfolds. This is a layout based on Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey", the basic structure of storytelling since time immemorial.
